The Balsa Tree

The Balsa tree is a member of the mallow family. Native to South America, it grows extremely rapidly, reaching close to 30 metres in under 15 years. Known for its lightweight and light-coloured wood, Balsa is a popular material for model making.

The Design Inspiration

Originally carved from Balsa wood, our Balsa flatware was sculpted much like the process for modelling wooden aeroplanes. During the design process, long flat slices were cut away from the knife model creating the unique knife at the centre of this range. Hidden on the back is the bolster and a hook shape also sculpted into the handle. This means that the knife hooks perfectly over your little finger while eating, making for a comfortable dining experience. Additionally, the cut-out along the top edge of the blade is called a Choil, a historic name for a decorative cut-away. The Balsa range is a truly unique addition to the home and makes for a wonderful talking point, a joy to use at dinner parties.

German Design Award Special

Awarded to the Balsa Cutlery range in 2017. The German Design Special Award is only awarded to projects that truly represent pioneering contributions to the German and International Design landscape.

IF Homestyle Award

Awarded to the Balsa Cutlery range in 2016. The IF Homestyle Award is for excellence in product design for home appliances in the Chinese market.

Awarded to the Balsa Mirror range in 2016. The Red Dot Design Award, or “Red Dot”, is internationally recognized as a quality label for excellent design.

Good Design Award

Awarded to Balsa Mirror in 2015. The Chicago Athenaeum presents the GOOD DESIGN Awards Program for the most innovative and cutting-edge industrial, product, and graphic designs produced around the world.
