An Introduction into How Cutlery is Made…

At Studio William our cutlery goes through approximately 45 processes and finishing techniques, to ensure the best possible quality. Read on to find out more about how our award-winning cutlery is created.

Before Stainless Steel:

Before our cutlery can be made by the factory, multiple drawings and models are made to perfect the design…

  • Firstly, using CAD software (computer aided design) and traditional pen and paper line drawings, designs are explored and conceptualised.
  • Then, using accurate engineering drawings, hand carved models are made using a man-made high-density foam which is like carving wood. A model is made for each of the main pieces – fork, knife, and spoon – so the range can be fully visualised as a set.
  • These models and drawings are passed onto a silversmith for metal versions to get an accurate representation of the weight and feel of the finished pieces.
  • All the above are then passed on to our factory, and after numerous samples are approved, the new range goes into production.

The Fundamental Pieces

When making forks, not only do we polish the back of the tines but also in between each tine, ensuring a more refined finish and thus dining experience. Our forks go through 16 steps to create the perfect form.

Our Studio William knives knives are hot forged in 13 Chromium stainless steel, they are then hardened to 48-52 HRC. This makes the blades much stronger and longer lasting.

The spoons are made by cold forging 18/10 stainless steel, due to the thickness of the handles, they are reheated during manufacturing and the handles cold forged again, this allows us to get the soft contours of the design to our desired specifications.

How Studio William knives are made step by step

The 5 Simple Steps

  1. A rough shape is made from stainless steel. This is called blanking, when punches and die systems are used to create a specific shape.
  2. These stainless-steel forms are then rolled, formed, and clipped to make the shape of cutlery we recognise.
  3. Next the blades are tempered (hardened), the fork tines clipped out, and the spoon bowl trimmed and shaped.
  4. Edges are then grinded and buffed to create smooth, clean lines.
  5. Finally, everything is polished multiple times, the back stamp is applied, and everything is sent off for inspection.

Quality Control

We really care about the smallest detail so all our designs will stand the test of time. Not only do we use the highest quality of material available, but every piece is also inspected by our Quality Control Team before shipping. This ensures that you always receive the best possible finish on your brand-new cutlery.
