A Bit About Kumquat

KUMQUAT

Thought to have originated in China but also largely cultivated in Japan, the Kumquat, meaning ‘gold orange’, named for the delicious fruit it bears, is a small but perfectly formed botanical species and the inspiration behind our award-winning Kumquat cutlery range.

Unlike our other tree editions, the vision for our Kumquat pieces stemmed from the perfectly balanced sweet and tart Kumquat fruit that so many people all over the world enjoy. It is the soft, elongated oval shape of these ‘gems of the citrus family’ that spurred us on to create handles formed with clean, straight lines and soft oval sections weighty yet comfortable and with a seamless transition into our Karri range, for diners and chefs who prefer to set the table using the traditional alternative to the Karri stand up knives.

A BIT ABOUT KUMQUAT

Kumquat trees and their delectable fruit has been described in literature for centuries, with records showing the importance of this fragrant, glossy-leaved shrub in Chinese literature dating back as far as 1178AD. It was only in the mid-19th Century that the Kumquat tree was introduced to and grown in Europe and North America, being used mostly as ornamental dooryard trees and potted specimens in patios and greenhouses – a beautiful addition to the home, thanks to the sweetly fragranced white flowers and dark green glossy leaves standing in stark contrast to the golden-yellow fruit.

As well as being very tasty and a fun alternative to olives in a martini, Kumquat fruit is also used for a variety of medicinal purposes, from healing sore throats to soothing respiratory issues. They are also extremely high in fibre (with 8 easy-to-eat kumquats being equivalent 10 grams of fibre) which helps to aid digestion and relieve bloating – the perfect after dinner treat!

INTRODUCING

Our Kumquat cutlery range has been created to flow seamlessly into our Karri range so that the two can be mixed and matched to suit your needs.

The strong yet easily integrated design makes the Kumquat range perfect for any place setting and any occasion, whether that’s for you to enjoy with friends at home or to lay on the table at a Michelin starred restaurant.
